McDonald’s just told Wall Street something you almost never hear from a Dow component: we are falling short.
At its first investor day in nearly three years, management admitted execution has slipped, then unveiled an $8.5 billion plan to fix it - $5 billion in rent relief and capital for franchisees, new restaurant designs, hand-breaded chicken to compete with Chick-fil-A. The stock dropped nearly 6%, its biggest single-day loss since March 2020.
Six months ago, McDonald’s hit an all-time high of $341. Today it’s near $235 - down 31% and sitting at 4-year lows. U.S. traffic fell last quarter even as same-store sales barely grew 0.8%. CEO Chris Kempczinski warned investors that flat traffic and sticky inflation aren’t going away.
The dividend yield just crossed 3.2% - the highest in McDonald’s history. A Dow component at 4-year lows, spending $8.5 billion to fix a problem it just admitted it has.
