Global EquitiesUnperturbed by deteriorating economic fundamentals and increasingly cautious corporate trading statements, global equity markets practiced to perfection the art of unconcerned denial during the period. Indian EquitiesIndian equities extended their gains in June, outperforming the broader Asia-Pacific region as well as global emerging markets.Japanese EquitiesJapanese equities rose again in June, capping out a positive first half of the 2023.Multi-AssetWithin private markets, it was a busy month with valuation statements. In June, listed equities produced a mid-single digit positive return and EM bonds produced a positive return. North American EquitiesUS equities ended the month higher. The recent compromise agreement to suspend the US debt ceiling until January 2025 was signed into law in early June, removing the risk of a default.Real EstateTotal returns for May were 0.5%, the same as in April (latest data, MSCI Monthly Index). Residential and retail sectors were the strongest over the month. In contrast, the office and hotel sectors were relatively weak.UK Equities The Bank of England surprised markets by hiking interest rates by 0.5% in June in response to high inflation and indicated that further increases could be expected in the coming months if prices continue to rise rapidly.Reports
