Wall Street spent the last year betting against Crown Castle. Starlink was supposed to make cell towers obsolete. The stock dropped 22%. Then SpaceX agreed to pay a reported $8 billion for wireless spectrum that only works with ground infrastructure.
On Thursday, Bloomberg reported that SpaceX has held private talks with Crown Castle about leasing towers. The target: roughly 80,000 cell sites across the U.S. for a terrestrial network to back up its satellites. On an earnings call this week, Crown Castle’s CEO was asked if they’d been talking to satellite providers. His answer: “You can assume that we’re talking to all parties.”
Crown Castle owns about 40,000 towers in the U.S. - and nothing else. It sold its fiber and small cell businesses for $8.5 billion earlier this year. It cut 20% of its workforce.
AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile all dropped on the news. Crown Castle’s stock went up.
