Why we're voting on MCD this week

McDonald’s just told Wall Street something you almost never hear from a Dow component: we are falling short.

At its first investor day in nearly three years, management admitted execution has slipped, then unveiled an $8.5 billion plan to fix it - $5 billion in rent relief and capital for franchisees, new restaurant designs, hand-breaded chicken to compete with Chick-fil-A. The stock dropped nearly 6%, its biggest single-day loss since March 2020.

Six months ago, McDonald’s hit an all-time high of $341. Today it’s near $235 - down 31% and sitting at 4-year lows. U.S. traffic fell last quarter even as same-store sales barely grew 0.8%. CEO Chris Kempczinski warned investors that flat traffic and sticky inflation aren’t going away.

The dividend yield just crossed 3.2% - the highest in McDonald’s history. A Dow component at 4-year lows, spending $8.5 billion to fix a problem it just admitted it has.

  • McDonald’s at ~19x forward earnings is well below its 5-year average of ~25x. At $235, the stock sits 31% below its March all-time high of $341. The dividend yield just crossed 3.2%, the highest in the company’s history. For a franchise model generating over $10B in annual operating income, this kind of discount hasn’t existed since the pandemic.
  • The NEXT strategy addresses real weaknesses. Hand-breaded chicken goes directly at Chick-fil-A and Raising Cane’s. Restaurant remodels include updated PlayPlaces and open kitchen layouts. McDonald’s still grew systemwide sales 5% to $37B last quarter. Revenue rose to $7.1B and adjusted EPS of $3.38 beat the $3.34 consensus. The $8.5B commitment is spread across a decade, not a single hit.
  • Franchisees operate 95% of restaurants and pay rent plus royalties regardless of traffic trends. Even with U.S. same-store sales at just +0.8%, McDonald’s posted $2.36B in net income last quarter. The global footprint - 45,000+ locations across 100+ countries - doesn’t disappear. When consumer spending recovers, McDonald’s already has the real estate.

Dud Case
  • U.S. traffic is falling, not just slowing. CEO Kempczinski told investors flat traffic and sticky inflation are the new normal for restaurants. Same-store sales grew just 0.8% in Q2 - propped up by price increases, not more customers walking through the door. From August 2025 to July 2026, the National Restaurant Association reported industry traffic declines in every month but one.
  • The $8.5 billion NEXT plan is an admission that McDonald’s restaurants need major work. $5 billion goes to rent relief and capital subsidies for franchisees who can’t afford to remodel on their own. McDonald’s delayed its 50,000-restaurant target from 2027 to 2028. Hand-breading chicken doesn’t fix the core problem: consumers with less money are eating out less.
  • At $235, McDonald’s is down 21% YTD while Starbucks is up 14%. Revenue missed estimates last quarter at $7.1B. The stock posted its biggest single-day drop since March 2020 after management asked investors to fund what amounts to a turnaround. Dow components aren’t supposed to need turnarounds.
