Why we're voting on RTX this week

Last month, the Pentagon handed Raytheon a $22.9 billion contract to build more Tomahawk missiles. It’s the largest single weapons deal in company history - and it exists because the US fired over 850 of them into Iran in the first month of Operation Epic Fury.

RTX hit an all-time high of $226.88 in August - up over 50% in twelve months as Iran tensions escalated into war. Q2 revenue of $24.7 billion beat estimates by nearly $2 billion. The backlog hit $289 billion. The proposed FY2027 defense budget is $1.5 trillion - the biggest increase since the Korean War.

The stock has pulled back 11% from its high to ~$201. This week, the US launched a new wave of strikes against Iran, and Iran retaliated across the region.

Record contracts. Record backlog. The biggest defense budget since the Korean War. The stock just dropped 11% from its high.

  • Last month the Pentagon awarded Raytheon a $22.9 billion Tomahawk missile contract - the largest weapons deal in company history. Q2 revenue of $24.7 billion beat estimates by $1.8 billion. Adjusted EPS of $1.89 topped the $1.66 consensus by 14%. They’ve bumped full-year guidance twice - now expecting $95 to $96 billion in revenue and $7.10 to $7.25 in EPS.
  • The proposed FY2027 defense budget is $1.5 trillion - a 42% increase and the biggest jump since the Korean War. Congress is advancing a $1.07 trillion Pentagon bill, the largest in history. Even if a ceasefire holds, missile stockpiles need years of replenishment. The US burned through over 850 Tomahawks in the first month alone.
  • RTX’s backlog hit $289 billion, up 22% in a year. Patriot missile orders alone topped $5 billion in Q2, driven by European rearmament and the first domestic GEM-T production order in over 30 years. Collins Aerospace and Pratt & Whitney serve the commercial aviation recovery, which means RTX isn’t a pure defense bet.

Dud Case
  • RTX hit $226.88 in August and has already pulled back 11% in three weeks. The conflict has swung between escalation and ceasefire since April, and each round of peace talks has knocked defense stocks lower. At $201, the stock is still up over 20% this year - if a durable settlement emerges, there’s room to fall.
  • At ~28x forward earnings, RTX trades 35% above GuruFocus’s estimated fair value of $154 and well above defense peers like Lockheed Martin at ~20x and Northrop Grumman at ~21x. Insiders have been net sellers through the summer. The $1.5 trillion defense budget hasn’t passed Congress yet and faces political resistance given steep proposed cuts to domestic programs.
  • Pratt & Whitney’s GTF engine recall remains a drag. Between 600 and 700 engines need shop visits for powder metal defects, a problem first disclosed in 2023 that’s still working through the fleet. Roughly two-thirds of RTX’s revenue comes from commercial aerospace - and that side has baggage.
